Peace & Social Concerns Notes / August 4

The Peace and Social Concerns Committee is working to help New Garden Friends Meeting incorporate more immediate social and economic justice actions into our everyday lives. Thus, every weekly newsletter will include one Anti-Racist Action suggestion and one website whereby members can find minority-owned business to support, if they so choose. The Meeting is not endorsing or advertising these businesses; we just feel it’s important to spread dollars more equitably to all community members and…

Friend to Friend – Conversations and Connection / Beginning Aug. 14

This is an opportunity for members and attenders of NGFM to get to know others and/or deepen relationships at NGFM during this time of isolation. Time commitment: approximately 15-30 minutes/week for 5 weeks beginning August 14. How it works: Friends fill out a short information form (look for a separate email from NGFM) and will be paired with a couple, family, or individual (depending on preferences indicated). The pairs will agree to connect with each…

Covid-19 Prevention Group Update / July 29, 2020

We will continue to worship together virtually and limit access to the meetinghouse, for now. We recognize that New Gardeners are eager to return to Meeting for Worship, to sit with one another, and be in community as is our tradition dating back to 1754. At this writing it has been more than four months since New Garden Friends gathered in person for Meeting for Worship. Precautionary measures to limit the spread of coronavirus have…

Finance & Stewardship Report / July 5th

Generally, our budget is in good shape. Contributions are down a bit from prior years with slightly fewer donors. But some expenses have been limited with the Meetinghouse closed. More people are participating in online donations through our web page. Thank you. The solar project is progressing, with a re-roofing contract about to be signed. I’m sure you’ll hear more about the project from the group working on it, but there should be little impact…

Help Families Save Energy and Money with New Garden Friends Meeting SOLAR+ Project

One of the measures of a good community is how it cares for others. As New Garden plans to install solar panels to cut our power bills, the Solar+ Project will also have an energy-saving outreach partnership with Community Housing Solutions (CHS) to help low income families reduce their power bills. Every year CHS repairs the homes of over 25 homeowners. With our partnership, CHS will install insulation and other weatherization measures, saving families up…

Absentee & Vote by Mail

Anyone who is eligible to vote in North Carolina is also eligible to vote using an absentee ballot and completing their voting by mail. I recently requested an absentee ballot. I was able to speak to someone in the Guilford County Board of Elections office who handles the absentee process. I was checking to be sure they had received my request because I had learned that the outside post office box at Friendly Center had…

Friends Committee on National Legislaton Speaks to Current Issues

Friends have long struggled with the many forms of racism in our meetings and our communities. Now, with numerous videos of violence directed toward black people, in particular, circulating the web and the tv news, it has the country’s attention like never before. Some Friends at New Garden have expressed a desire to write letters in support of the Black Lives Matter campaign but would like a template to follow. Bobby Trice, with Friends Committee…
