New Garden Meeting, as part of the celebration of 350 years of Quakers in North Carolina, invites nearby Friends to experience a special Underground Railroad Tour in the Guilford Woods, led by James Shields. James is a graduate of Guilford College, former Director of the Bonner Center at Guilford and a longtime actor and singer in theatre productions at Snow Camp, most notably Pathway to Freedom. He is well-versed in African American as well as Quaker history, and hopefully will sing a spiritual or two as part of his presentation. See a video of James at the trailhead giving a brief introduction to the tour.

Due to limited space for walking and hearing well on the trail, Friends should register at: https://tinyurl.com/bp5awmdy

The plan is to meet at 9:40 at New Garden Meeting (801 New Garden Rd.) on Saturday, June 25. People will either walk to the trailhead behind the Guilford Lake or carpool over to parking near the woods.

[The trail to the champion “Underground Railroad Tree” is 0.3 mile one-way. It includes uneven surfaces with an accessible viewing platform and seating at the end.]

Following the tour all are welcome to eat lunch in the Guilford College Cafeteria in Founders Hall. It is important to indicate on the form if you (and any accompanying you) will be joining us.

Looking forward to seeing some of you there!
