Our speakers: Bob and Hope Carter are medical missionaries who began their career in 1985 serving FUM at Friends Lugulu Hospital in Western Kenya. After Bob earned his master’s degree in public health at UNC-Chapel Hill, they returned to Africa in 1997, serving in Zambia with SIM for ten years before returning to Kenya. In Zambia, Bob was a public health consultant for the District Health Office, started the district’s first free HIV clinic, and chaired the AIDS Advisory Committee for the Churches Health Association of Zambia (CHAZ). Meanwhile, Hope oversaw TB and Leprosy services at Mukinge Hospital.
For the last 11 years, they lived in Kijabe, Kenya dividing their time between Kijabe Hospital and Moffat Bible College. Hope assisted the hospital with its HIV clinic 2 years and then focused full-time on teaching in the AIDS Ministries Dept. at Moffat and served as the college’s health coordinator. Bob taught the hospital’s family medicine residents, oversaw its palliative care services for ten years, and led its successful efforts to initiate chemotherapy services for cancer patients. And he served as director of Moffat’s AIDS Ministries Department. Last year the department officially transitioned into the Department of Community Health and Development. Since 2020, Bob has also assisted SIM’s International Health Ministries office to design and roll out ‘COVID Equip’, a program for training pastors, chaplains and Christian community leaders in a gospel-based response to COVID in local communities. As of last year, he is now “retired” from clinical care and focuses more on public health issues and medical education.
