Update on Save Guilford College’s efforts:

We’re happy to report that the Guilford College board of trustees announced in early January that they were “setting aside” the proposed cuts to the liberal arts and terminations of tenured faculty positions. Instead, the board has created a new “implementation process” to discern financially feasible alternatives for the school that are more in line with the liberal arts tradition and the Quaker values which have been Guilford’s foundation for nearly two centuries.

Save Guilford College was invited to nominate representatives to those committees and used the opportunity to make sure that a diversity of voices would be heard. Part of this process is considering how the college can promote the value of the education it provides to twenty-first century students and retain those students through graduation. Another committee is analyzing the college’s finances to make decisions about where there are opportunities to restructure the budget and save money over the next eighteen months or so. Please continue to hold these deliberations in the Light.

To meet the college’s goals and avoid draconian cuts to faculty and programs which would themselves endanger the college’s future, Guilford needs our financial support during this critical time. A central element of our efforts will be tapping into the energy and resources of the college’s alumni and supporters both around the world and in the Greensboro area in a comprehensive philanthropic campaign.

Save Guilford College is inviting donations to a fund at the Community Foundation for Greater Greensboro that we have set up for this purpose. We will forward all donations (minus a nominal processing fee that goes to CFGG) to the college upon confirmation of financial transparency and good faith efforts to create a path forward for the college that is in accord with its mission and commitments to faculty and staff and will preserve Guilford College as an institution that changes live for the better—both those of its alumni and those whom they go on to serve.

If you are willing to help us reach our fundraising goal of $2 million by March 31, 2021 (and another $4 million over the course of the year after that), please visit: tinyurl.com/donatesaveguilford or make your check payable to CFGG and write the name of our fund (Save Guilford College Fund) designation in the memo. Checks can be mailed to CFGG, 330 South Greene St., Suite 100, Greensboro, NC 27401.
