9:45 a.m. – 10:45 a.m. / Barbara Levin will join us to share information about Real World English (RWE). RWE is a collaboration between UNCG and Allen Middle School. This free program has two major components: (1)Adult TESOL classes (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) at four levels, and (2) STEAM activities (Science, Technology,Engineering, Art, Math) for children ages 2-14 while their parents attend English class. RWE instructors and facilitators include teachers and parent liaisons from Guilford County Schools, teacher educators from UNCG, and preservice teachers from UNCG. It began in January 2015 when parents at Allen Middle expressed a desire to improve their English so they could better communicate with teachers, feel more comfortable during social and professional interactions, support their children’s learning, and prepare them to be college- and career-ready. Each year RWE offers a minimum of 24 three-hour classes for adults and children on Saturday mornings. This spring they were able to offer three additional Saturday classes in May thanks, in part, to contributions from NGFM.
