Friends Committee on National Legislation will be holding its Annual Public Policy Institute and Annual Meeting in Washington, D.C., November 28 to December 2. It is not too late register online at: fcnl.org. The Public Policy Institute will focus on the farm bill (H.R. 2) Why the farm bill? It is the largest source of food assistance for millions of struggling families in our country. The Senate and House have passed different versions of the bill and are currently reconciling them. The biggest hurdle to completing conference negotiations between the House and the Senate is the future of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP, formerly food stamps). The House version of the farm bill, passed by just two votes (213-211), would take food away from people unable to find jobs. The bipartisan Senate bill passed by a vote of 83 – 11 and does not make it harder for those looking for work to get SNAP. If you cannot attend the meeting in Washington, you can lobby on this issue from the comfort of your ipad, computer, or telephone. Please urge our senators and your House representative to pass the Senate’s SNAP provisions in the final farm bill. Contact Dot Mason at ([email protected]) for more information.
