Event Series Event Series: Six-Week Course on Quaker Classics

Six-Week Course on Quaker Classics

February 3, 2019 @ 6:30 pm - 8:00 pm

There is no “Quaker canon” (It would be tough for a pacifist group to have one!), but there are cherished texts that have inspired, informed, and guided Friends through the centuries and help define the core of Quaker belief, practice, and spirituality. Margaret Webb and Max Carter will lead this discussion-oriented course, encouraging participants to explore the literature that has not only stood the test of time among Friends but in many instances has been included in lists of the best devotional literature in religion worldwide. We’ll explore excerpts from the journals of George Fox and John Woolman; read the spiritual insights of Howard Thurman, Isaac Pennington, Margaret Fell, Elizabeth Bathurst, and Caroline Stephen; see why Thomas Kelly’s “A Testament of Devotion” has moved so many. The class will be held on January 6, 13, 20, 27, and February 3 and 10 at 6:30 p.m. at New Garden Friends Meeting. All participants should purchase a copy of Quaker Spirituality: Selected Writings edited by Douglas V. Steere. Several copies are also available to borrow so contact Max or Margaret if you would prefer to borrow one. To register for this class please contact Margaret Webb at ([email protected]) or 336-292-5487 and Max Carter at ([email protected]).
